Eau Claire student gains 40,000 followers, famous on Internet
by Anna Soldner
Everyone knows UW-Eau Claire senior Brian Miller as the skilled graphic designer and mastermind of puns, but as of this week, he can now add ‘Tumblr famous’ to his résumé.
Miller, who started his blog Lions and Vultures in 2007, reached 40,000 Tumblr follower on Monday, May 7.
Tumblr CEO David Karp awarded Miller with an electronic plaque and lifetime supply of Culver’s butter burgers at an award ceremony Wednesday in a room on the second floor of Hibbard.
“It’s extremely humbling to be Internet famous,” Miller said in his 30-minute acceptance speech to a couple of his besties. “It’s weird though, I guess I feel pressure to step up my game a little. I hope I don’t sell out.”
Launched in 2007, Tumblr is a multimedia blogging platform with over six million users. Karp said he founded Tumblr so that people like Miller could reach their life goals.
“Tumblr celebrities like Brian are the voice of our generation,” Karp said. “They’re a bit narcissistic, but really good at photoshop. They’ll have no problem finding jobs.”
Miller’s customized site, described as “a blog of neat things to look at and listen to” features monthly low-fi Nintendocore remixes, artsy photos of Drake and calculated selfies.
So what’s a day in the life of a Tumblr celebrity? “As a blogger, my daily routine is in constant flux,” he explained. “Usually I wake up, take a few GPOY’s (short for “Gratuitous Picture of Yourself”), wait for the press to contact me and maybe go outside if I’m feeling frisky.”
Miller said that contrary to popular belief, blogging is a lot of hard work. “It’s all about making it look effortless and having good taste,” he said. “GIFs and memes are fine in moderation. Reblog a GIF of Michael Scott from “The Office” and it’s over.”
Friend and coworker Cal McNeil runs Fashion Things and Stuff, a blog dedicated to the latest fashion ads, editorials and runway looks. McNeil said he thinks Miller has reached high levels of Tumblr fame because he’s so cool. “Let’s face it — Brian’s hip as hell,” McNeil said with a shrug.
“Everything he posts gets like, 500 notes just because he’s freaking Brian Miller.” Miller agreed. “Yeah, I mean, it’s all about not really giving a shit, ” he said. “Being earnest on the Internet is pretty much social suicide. The point is to be so ironic that you don’t even know what you’re truly interested in anymore.”
Cathy Miller, Brian’s mom, says she’s proud of her son but doesn’t know what Tumblr is. “All these years he’s been alone in his bedroom I thought he was looking at porn,” she said with a laugh. “Guess he’s a blogger now.”
This summer, as an additional acknowledgement of his excellence, Miller will join other Tumblr celebrities at a honorary ceremony on Tinychat.com, which is basically Skype for hipsters.
Until then, Miller plans to continue blogging until Vice features him in their website. He encourages everyone to check out his blog — even haters, who he describes as his motivators.
“Feel free to message me, but I probably won’t reply because I have like, 20,000 asks,” he said.
